Journal #008 | How the "Unstructured" Cap Became a Style Icon

It Started With Taking Something Apart.
For most of its history, the baseball cap was stiff.
A rigid crown.
A firm brim.
Sharp, deliberate lines.
Then, in the 1990s, a group of college students did something simple.
They took that structure apart — and, without meaning to, created one of the most enduring shapes in modern headwear.
Breaking the Mold, Literally
Until the 1970s, wearing a baseball cap outside the ballpark was considered unusual.
By the 1990s, that had changed — and a new variation was taking shape on American campuses.
College students and fraternity members began removing the buckram lining that kept the front panels rigid, reshaping the brim into a looser curve, and even running their caps through the wash for a broken-in, worn feel.
The result had no name yet.
It just felt more honest — less like a uniform, more like something that had actually been lived in.
From Campus Habit to Cultural Marker
The unstructured cap didn't stay a campus habit for long.
Brands like '47 built their identity around this looser, softer silhouette, and it became a defining trend of the mid-to-late 1990s.
In 1996, filmmaker Spike Lee asked New Era to make him a custom red New York Yankees cap — the first time a cap didn't wear a team's official colors.
That single request helped shift the cap from sports equipment to a personal statement, opening the door to a custom cap market that still exists today.
Why the "Undone" Look Endured
Trends built on rigid perfection tend to fade fast.
The unstructured cap did the opposite.
Its appeal was never about looking new.
It was about looking real — a shape that softened with wear instead of holding a fixed form, a fit that felt more like a habit than an accessory.
That quality made it far easier to wear every day, across generations, without ever feeling like a costume.
The GRACE Philosophy
This is exactly the shape GRACE was built on.
No rigid front panels.
No stiff, engineered crown.
Just a soft, considered structure designed to move with you — and to look better with time, not worse.
We didn't reinterpret the unstructured cap as a trend.
We simply kept refining the idea that started it: less structure, more character.
If you'd like to see how that philosophy comes to life, explore The GRACE Collection, our timeless GRACE Classics, or the refined GRACE Heritage 5-Panel.

Some designs are engineered to hold their shape.
The best ones are built to earn one.
We're simply proud to keep shaping ours.
